Entertainers Day 2007

Over 120 Cub Scouts and Brownies from Stevenage and surrounding areas spent Saturday 10th March or Sunday 11th March working towards their Entertainers Badge at Datchworth Village Hall and adjacent Scout HQ.

The play had been pre-written by a Stevenage Cub Scout leader, which was based around an Award Ceremony for childrens books and films...Each evening performance included scenes from Noddy, Peter Pan, Winnie The Pooh, Batman, and Beauty and the Beast

When the children arrived at 9am each morning, we had no idea of their individual abilities. So we began a selection process for the main roles by involving all the children in a few "acting games". By 10am, the children had been split into drama groups to rehearse their scenes.
During the day, the drama groups took breaks from rehearsing to help with costumes, scenery painting, and making props. In total we had over 25 adult volunteers each day who helped the children prepare costumes, props, scenery, and rehearse scenes, whilst other adult volunteers that have experience in the Sound & Lighting aspects of theatres set-up and prepared the stage using their own equipment.

At 2pm, the play was put together for the first time, with a complete run through.
The "Ocean Star" Fish & Chip Shop opened especially for us each day, so we could provide an evening meal to the Cubs at 5pm.

We started our dress rehearsal at 6pm, which was still going when parents started arriving at 7pm! Everything was ready for the 7:30pm performance for the audience of nearly 200.

I think everyone will agree that what followed was a fantastic, professional and enjoyable performance as well as an amazing achievement by the children, and the adults that had spent the day (and weeks of planning beforehand) giving up their time voluntarily.
